PP General İnformation
Polypropylene is divided into three main groups according to way that they are obtained. Isolation polypropylene was discovered in 1954 by. Prof. G. Natta and his team. Industrial production began in 1957, PP is produced from propylene (hydrocarbon gas derived from the distillation of petroleum) through poymerization with stereospecific catalysts. These are capable of binding numerous propylene molecules to one another during polymerization, so that a spiral shaped chain is created. The PP spiral molecule is made entirely of carbon and hydrojen atoms. When numerous spiral chains join up in the solid state, they from lamellar crystal structures that grow in a spherical way and create the so called "spherulites". Consequently, the microscopic structure of a PP article consists of numerous spherulites. If very small spherical particles of ethylenepropylene rubber are dispersed in the continous matrix of the isotactic PP, we have the so called heterophasic copolymers. Heterophasic copolymers have a much higher breaking risk strength than isotactic PP, because the rubber particles absorb the energy of the impact. When ethylene based groups are inserted in the isotactic PP spiral chains (ethylene is also derived from petroleum distillation) then random copolymers occur, which are characterized, in comparison with isotactic PP, by:
* similar impact strenght
* greater elasticity
* lower melting point
* high transparence They indicate different features with these points. Finally, three families of plastic materials can be optained from propylene through polymerization. Due to the purity of the PP it can be used in the most "delicate" sectors, such as food and pharmaceuticals.

PP (polypropylene) is one of the most commonly used plastics and is resistant to heat, so it is used as an insulation material to ensure that your white goods are safer and have a longer life. Thanks to its corrugated structure, it provides protection against impacts and external effects.
